This plate is used to maintain the torque on the through bolts when a cylinder is removed for maintenance. This torque helps ensure that the bearings do not shift when the crankshaft is turned. The rubber grommet in the center hole is large enough for the connecting rod to pass through. This also protects the case and the connecting rod from contacting each other.
